(More on Carriage Style Doors and Glass Garage Doors Below)
Unfortunately, the garage door industry is not strictly monitored. There are many fly-by-night companies that are not insured and do not provide their employee’s with workmen’s compensation. You will want to research for a company that:
Most important, choose a company that provides training for their technicians. Every year, there are more accidents related to garage doors than to lawn mowers and snow blowers combined. You can avoid future garage door accidents when the technician is properly trained and certified in safety procedures.
The most obvious reason to replace your garage door is that it does not operate properly and is a potential hazard. A garage door is a heavy moving wall that, over time, has a greater and greater capability for danger. Remember, the accident rate for garage doors is high. You need to replace the door before it contributes to those statistics.
Another reason for replacing your garage door is that you wish to create a good first impression into your home. When someone approaches your driveway, the garage door is one of the first things they see. Doors that are dented, rusted, reveal cracks and are peeling paint, create a poor first impression of your home & lifestyle.
Or, maybe you want a new garage door simply because the door panels are deteriorating and you are weary of continually maintaining them.
"2 More Things to you may wish to consider...
There is a wide range of choices when purchasing a garage door. You can purchase from an impersonal mega-home supply company where they will offer you the least expensive prices available. At these home supply stores, you may be limited to your choice of steel doors. (See #1 for the pros and cons of steel doors.) The installation they provide for you will be contracted out. You probably will not know who the subcontractor is, or from what company, until they show up for the installation.
You can buy a garage door from someone who works out of his own garage, possibly not as his main occupation but as a side source of income. Here you will probably order a door from pictures and brochures. You may have a long wait , sometimes months, before the door can be installed.
You can do business with a “gypsy” who works out of the back of his truck. He can give you a choice of whatever doors he has on hand that day and he will do the installation on the spot. It is likely he does not have insurance. It is also possible that you will not be able to locate him again, if there is a problem.
OR, You can deal with a reputable garage door company. This company will either send a representative to your home, and/or they may have a showroom that you and your family can visit so that you can see exactly what you are buying. These companies employ their own installers and technicians and will guarantee materials and labor. They also maintain inventories so they are able to complete your installation quickly.
REMEMBER: Ideally, you should be able to have a new garage door installed whenever you want – any season, any day of the week, any time of the day, in almost any kind of weather. There is no reason why you would need to take a day off of work to wait around for an installation. A good, reputable garage door company will take your schedule into consideration, as well as agree to do the work at a time that is convenient for you, whether it be in the evening when you are at home or during the weekend.
Just about all garage doors come with a warranty. Make sure you know exactly what is being promised to you. A garage door has many components: panels, insulation, cables, hardware, motor, etc. Find out if the warranty covers all parts and labor? When you read the fine print, you may find that the warranty does not cover warping, splitting, cracking, denting, or rusting if the door is scratched. Be sure to check all of what is promised to you.
